Common Questions We Hear From Clients

With over 70 years of combined legal experience, our lawyers have heard many questions throughout the years from those struggling with family law concerns in Illinois. We wanted to take a few moments to answer some of the most frequently asked questions that we have received at Ryan Family Law P.C., so that you understand more about your case and our legal services.

How Long Will My Case Take?

The short and simple answer to this question is “it depends.” The slightly longer and more complicated answer is it all depends on the issues that need to be addressed during the case. For example, if you and your spouse are going through a divorce and agree on the custody of the kids and the division of marital property, things can be finalized in a relatively short amount of time.

However, if there are any disputes that arise during the process, things can take much longer to complete. If the case goes inside the courtroom, it may take some time before the case comes to an end.

The important thing to remember is that the real goal is not to get your case over as soon as possible. You focus should be on getting the result you need to be in a positive position after the dispute is resolved. We make every effort to find the right result for you as efficiently as possible.

What Will My Case Cost?

This is another difficult question for us to answer without knowing the details of your situation. Again, the easier your case, the lower the cost of our legal services. The more complicated your case becomes, the more likely it is that the cost of representation will increase.

We discuss our specific fees with you during your consultation. We explain what we do, and the costs for each case that we handle. We carefully explain our fee structure with you, and allow you to ask any questions that you may have about the costs of your case. In some cases, financial assistance may be available.

Why Do I Need A Lawyer?

You may be wondering why you can’t simply handle your divorce or family law case yourself. Here are a few good reasons to retain an attorney.

What Is Your Style Of Representation?

There are some attorneys and law firms that advertise that they are bulldogs — that is, tenacious fighters who never back down from a fight. We feel that is not always the best approach to take for family law cases. We tailor the representation style that we need based on what is right for your specific case. If we can work together to find an agreement with the other side, it is likely to have a positive impact upon your future after the case is over.

However, sometimes playing nice is not going to work. If we have to fight over every single issue, we are ready to do so. We have extensive experience as litigators and we are going to make sure that your future is protected at all times.
