Once people know you are divorcing they might start to view you in a romantic way. It could be someone you have known for ages, or it could be someone you bumped into for the first time after you or your spouse had filed the divorce papers.
Either way, you are free to date them if you wish. You are not going to be arrested for adultery and a court should not factor it into its divorce decisions. That does not mean you should though. It might be better to ask them to wait until the divorce is complete for several reasons:
You could antagonize your spouse
Maybe your spouse will be glad to see you happy with someone else. But perhaps they won’t, at least not yet. They may need time to process the divorce and seeing you replace them so fast might not do much for their self-esteem. As a result, they might lash out and complicate the divorce.
You might benefit from some alone time
Do you really want to step straight into a new relationship? Or could you benefit from being single for a while, to give you time to reflect on what you want for the next stage of your life? You might not be the best partner right now either, as you likely still have a lot on your plate with your ongoing divorce.
You could worry your children
If a child sees you replacing their other parent with a new boyfriend or girlfriend so soon, they might worry you could also replace them with someone. They will already feel unsure due to the changes the divorce is causing, so moving on to someone new so quickly could make it even worse for them. Besides, they will likely need you to dedicate time to them.
Learning more about your divorce options can help you get to the stage where you are freer to date faster.
