4 tips for building a support system during divorce

Support is crucial when going through a divorce. You need to surround yourself with people who can help you get through the process healthily. However, besides the help you may automatically get from loved ones, you need to actively find or build a social support system.

Here are four tips to help you:

1. Plan activities

Consider reaching out to family members and friends to plan dinners, coffee dates, walks, hiking events and so on. During these activities, you can talk about your emotions to lighten your heart while simultaneously having fun.

2. Accept invites

If your friends invite you to events, it’s vital to accept invites even if you don’t feel like leaving the house. Isolation during divorce may negatively affect your physical and mental well-being.

If you are not ready to talk about the divorce, politely ask your loved ones not to raise the matter. Let them know you will discuss it when ready, but you still wish to be included in their plans.

3. Cultivate your relationship with acquaintances

Chances are you have “friendly strangers” in your life, including family, work colleagues or the person you keep running into at the coffee shop. Cultivating these relationships may be beneficial during this time.

Thus, instead of only saying hello as always, have a small conversation. Over time, you may have a connection, which can become a positive relationship.

4. Join a support group

Local and online support groups are a great source of support for people going through divorce. There are numerous support groups in the country. Thus, you can find one that ticks all your boxes.

Although necessary, it can be challenging to build or find a support group during divorce. The above-discussed tips and legal guidance can help you protect your well-being.
